Burcklé fan or trapezium reeds

Trapezium or fan reeds are designed exclusively for use on warpers. They are built much the same as an ordinary weaving reed except that the dents are spread wider at the top than at the bottom. The purpose of this type is to allow for a small adjustment in the warp width by raising or lowering the warp sheet in the reed. It does not offer the great range of an expansion comb, but when built properly it does give good service for small adjustments. The trapezium reed can be furnished with solder blocks as shown for single end and end leasing.

Two factors determine the quality of a trapezium reed. One is the know-how in manufacturing. A trapezium reed is considerably more difficult to build than an ordinary weaving reed since the dents must be set at a uniform angle. Secondly, the difference between the top and bottom spread of the dents (or fan) should be kept to a minimum. When it increases, it becomes more and more difficult to accurately control the uniformity of spacing in the dents. In no case should this difference be greater than the clear height of the reed. The greater the amount of fan, the more costly your reed will be and the lower its quality.

Trapezium reeds can be hard chrome plated for maximum wear resistance, if the density is greater than 6 to 8 dents per cm. The dents are made out of flat wire.
